Just some of the many attractions near Mannix Point in South West Kerry |
|
Skellig Michael - A UNESCO World Heritage Site
“But for the magic that takes
you out, far out of this time and this world, there is
Skellig Michael, ten miles off the Kerry coast, shooting
straight up 700ft. sheer out of the Atlantic.” (George
Bernard Shaw)
This is the nearest camping and caravan park to the departure
points and you can book from here to land on Skelligs. Free
transport is available to and from the port for backpackers
and cyclists. The highlight of a holiday in Kerry.

Valentia Island
 |
Valentia is a special place, an island of great character
and beauty. For me, a combination of cycling and walking is
the best way to truly appreciate the island. It is accessible
in summer by ferry and throughout the year via a road bridge.
Be prepared to take your time. The island offers a wealth of
experiences. For lots of information on this special island just enter Valentia Island in a Google search. |

A walk to Ballycarbery, Leacanabuaile and Cahergal
There is a foreshore walk from Mannix Point
to an area known locally as “over-the-water”. The
walk offers many surprises. You may encounter seals and otters
and unusual species of birds. You will visit the ruin of
a castle from the 15th century and stone forts from the 6th
century and have a break for a swim in one of the little
harbours on the way. If your interest is a challenging high
level walk there are plenty of mountains to choose from.
Maps and guides can be bought or borrowed at reception. You
may even like to join the local walking club for their Sunday
trek.

Cycling in Kerry
 |
If you are planning a cycling holiday in Kerry
make sure that you have a copy of the “Ring of Kerry
Cycle Route”. The route is almost 70% independent of the main
road and much more enjoyable for cycling. Contact me if you
have difficulty getting one. I can help you to plan cycling
trips ranging from one hour to a whole day or longer. |
Activity Groups
I have many years of experience of catering for Venture Scouts,
Duke of Edinburgh Award Schemes and Expeditions. The following is
an extract from one of their reports:-
“Our entry into base camp was breathtaking. The setting
exceeded our wildest expectations. We had wanted a remote area
suitable for sea-canoeing and mountain exploration. Mannix Point
was perfect. The location suited all our requirements. The site
bordered Valentia Harbour, a natural archipelago of islands and
rocks sheltering us from the Atlantic and offering unique coastal
exploration potential. On all other sides were unspoilt mountain
ranges.” G.
